Honoring A Distinguished Past

Coming from Birmingham, in 1939 Professor James Rayfield Weatherly conceived the idea of a funeral establishment in Sumter County, Alabama and the surrounding territories after noticing its deplorable burial and funeral service practices. Leaving the position as principal of York West End High School after three years, he ventured out in to the mortuary field, and along with a partner opened Bradford-Weatherly Funeral Home on First Street in downtown York, Alabama. Shortly after, he became sole proprietor, along with his wife and helpmate, Addie “Mom Mae” Weatherly. They operated the twin business venture; Weatherly Funeral Home and Mae’s Flower Shop. In 1942, Weatherly Funeral Home was officially established and the permanent site was constructed on Highway 11-East with the open house dedication, November 20, 1954. Today this location is maintained by third generation funeral service professionals.
