XAVIER LOUIS MITCHELL, SR., age 68, of Sacramento, California, born to the union of Leroy and Willie Mae Cherry Mitchell in Butler, Choctaw County; Alabama, peacefully transitioned surrounded by those who loved him at his residence September 4, 2020. Xavier is affectionately known as "X.L., Poppa and Bo Diddley". Service of Memory and Life Celebration is slated Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in Butler Chapel AME Zion Cemetery, located 713 Desoto Road, Butler 36904. Rev. Kennith Jefferson, pastor is the officiant with his sister, Minister Sadie Jones delivering the eulogy and offering words of comfort and consolation. Family private viewing is Friday, September 11, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. with public visitation from 5-7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Hayden & Butler Funeral Home, Lisman. X.L. confessed his life to Christ at an early age at Butler Chapel AME Zion Church. He was a 1970 graduate of Choctaw County High School and he attended Hopson State Technical School in Thomasville, Alabama. He was united in holy matrimony to Betty Vines Mitchell and to this union were born two children, Xavier Louis Mitchell, Jr., and Purvis James Mitchell. For some time he worked at Georgia Pacific Corporation in Pennington, Alabama until he moved to Sacramento, California in 1988. He then worked at California Franchise State Tax until his retirement in 2012. X.L. was an avid lover of sports. X.L. was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers - Joe Robert, Leroy, Jr., Archie, David, Charles, Sr., and Spencer L. Mitchell; three sisters, Lucille Mitchell Thomas, Willie G. Mitchell Hill and Donna Mitchell Brown. Those who remain to celebrate his life and cherish precious memories are: his two sons, Xavier Louis Mitchell, Jr., of Butler, Alabama and Purvis James (Tanika) Mitchell of Meridian, MS; one sister, Minister Sadie Jones of Sacramento, California; one brother, Lorenzo Mitchell, Sr., of Butler, Alabama; three grandsons, Xavier Louis (Tre) Mitchell III of Orlando, Florida, Davon Roshard Graham of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Jayden Ace Mitchell of Meridian, Ms; one great-granddaughter, Khloe Madison Graham of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends whom he loved dearly.
