MARGARETTE AMERSON, age 87, affectionately known by many as Nikki, was born to the blessed union of the late Edgar and Leona Hendon Amerson March 14, 1938 in York; Sumter County, Alabama.  She peacefully transitioned to the Will of God at her residence surrounded by loving family on August 19, 2025 at 7:15 a.m. Service of Remembrance and Life Celebration is slated for Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, located 254 McConnell Street.  Rev. Jonathan Byrd, pastor, will deliver the eulogy offering words of comfort and consolation with Sis. Bernice Nixon serving as Mistress of Order.  Sister Amerson will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.  Interment and Service of Committal follows in Home Mission Cemetery, off of Millville Road 19, also York, Alabama.  Visitation for family and friends is scheduled Tuesday evening from 2-5:00 p.m. in the Weatherly Chapel.  On Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. the processional leaves with Escort service from the family residence, located 308 Amerson Street.  **(Please turn on flashing lights for extra safety)**

She grew up and attended York West End High School, and after graduating she furthered her education and obtained a B. S. degree from Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi and during her work career, she also attended Harris Jr. College in Meridian, MS.  Then she later relocated to Hartford, Connecticut and worked for the Hartford Police Department.

Upon retirement, she moved back home to York, Alabama and worked as a dispatcher for the City of York Police Department.  She continued her diligent work at the First Baptist Church where she was a faithful member serving once as secretary.  She was an usher and later became the birthday keeper and Hospitality Chair until her health began to fail.  During the time she could not attend church, she stayed involved with member's birthday shout-outs.

Sister Amerson is survived by two sons:  Allen "Duke" Chiles of York, Alabama and Travis Chiles of Georgia;  four (4) grandchildren; fifteen (15) great grandchildren; and many friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers, and is remembered for her kindness, strength, tenacity and generosity.
