LOLA MAE POWE, born August 27, 1935 in Sumter County; Ward, Alabama to the late Rev. Thomas Alexander and Mamie Foster Roberts passed away at her residence in Saginaw, Michigan surrounded by loving family on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the age of 87. Family hour will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 936 N. 6th St., Saginaw, Michigan 48607, with the funeral service commencing at 11:00 a.m. Father Frank Voris OFM-Cap will officiate. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Mrs. Lola Powe will be taken to Weatherly Funeral Home, 1575 East 4th Ave., York, Alabama 36925. (205) 392-4851. Service of Remembrance and Life Celebration is Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. from the Weatherly Chapel with interment following in Elmwood Memorial Gardens, 11313 US Highway 11, York, Alabama. Lola accepted Christ at an early age and she was an over achiever and very determined. She graduated high school in Akron, Ohio in 1953. She married Norris Powe in Akron, Ohio and moved to Saginaw, Michigan where they had three daughters and two sons. She started her college education at Delta College in Bay City, Michigan, later attending Saginaw Valley State College earning her Bachelor of Education degree. She taught sixth grade at Edith Baillie Elementary School, then decided to teach 2nd grade in order to teach more students to read. She taught at this school for nine years and then moved to the Reading Recovery Program at Morley and Jones Elementary Schools. Lola earned her Master's Degree in Education at Central Michigan University. After 26.9 years of faithful and honorable service in the school district in the city of Saginaw, she retired on June 9, 2000. Lola was a dedicated member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Saginaw where she continued her passion teaching in religious education programs. She was a great craftsman and enjoyed sewing, crocheting upholstering and baking. Lola crocheted and donated baby hats to local hospitals. She made baby blankets and lap blankets for family and friends to pass on to generations to come as part of family history. Her blankets are spread across the U.S.A. and internationally. Mrs. Lola Mae Powe leaves to cherish precious memories of her: father of her children, Norris "Pete" Powe; daughters, Judith Dawn, Orogbu Powe, Angela Dorcas Powe; son, Christopher Alan (Sonya) Powe; grandchildren, Uzoamaka Orogbu, Braeden C. Powe and Ethan M. Powe; sister, Christine Roberts-Deloach; sons-in-law, Somdina Orogbu and Edward Jones; brothers -in-law, John E. (Barbara) Powe and Joseph W. Powe; sisters-in-law, Leanna Niles, Bertha Powe and Rachel Roberts; god-children, Jackie, Christine and Lori Watkins, Pamela Watkins Johnson, Latricia Strother, Ashley Jones Griffith, including special god-son, Corey Buchanan; special niece and nephews, Tonya Power, Jarvis Stephens and Willie "Pete" Roberts, Jr; endeared family members, Roselee Harrison Jones, Roy L. Jones, Doris Jones, Melvin (Deloria) Jones, Lavern (William) Watson, Stephen (Sarah) Jones, Orlando and Sheldon Jones, Matthew (Ann) Jones and Barbara J Powe; special friends, Mrs. Bernice A. Dorsey, Katherine (Riley) Primas, Kermitt (Sidney) Diggs, Mrs. Lynn Dugan and her front porch buddy, Mrs. Hattie Ray; other relatives and friends. Lola was preceded in death by children, Sheila Marie and Marlon Dexter Powe, maternal grandparents, Floyd and Tamer Foster; parents, Rev. Thomas Alexander and Mamie Foster Roberts; step-father, Rev. C. M. Roberts; brothers - Willie Roberts, Sr. and Floyd Alexander, two sisters, Maryann Roberts and Annie Mae Stephens Wheeler.
