JACK ("Zack") PORTIS, age 76, of Cuba, Alabama, born the fifth of eight children in Lauderdale County, Mississippi to the union of the late Henry and Essie Mae Campbell Portis, Sr. peacefully transitioned October 22, 2020 at Rush Foundation Hospital, Meridian, Ms. Graveside Service of Remembrance and Life Celebration is slated for Saturday, October 31, 2020 in Mount Zion Cemetery, Jarman Road, Cuba, with Rev. Willie Harrison, pastor, delivering the eulogy and offering words of comfort and consolation. Visitation for family and friends is scheduled Friday evening, October 30, 2020 from 3-6:00 p.m. in the Weatherly Chapel. Zack accepted Christ as his Saviour at an early age joining Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Cuba, Alabama. He graduated from Kinterbish High School, also Cuba. He moved to New Orleans, La., and lived there for forty years. There he met and married the love of his life, Shirley Moss. They were together for sixty (60) plus years and to this union two daughters were born. In New Orleans, he joined Ray Avenue Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Robert Johnson. He worked for the Public Grain Elevator Company until his health failed. He then retired. After Hurricane Katrina he returned to Cuba, Alabama and re-established his membership with Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He faithfully worked on the Building Committee until his death October 22, 2020. Zack was very much a family man. He loved fishing, hunting, working on cars, watching wrestling and he was also a comedian. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers - Robert Earl, Leroy and Willie David Portis; two sisters, Ora Nell Portis Tanks and Susie Portis Brooks. Those who survive to cherish and to celebrate a beautiful life well-lived are: his wife, Shirley Portis; five daughters, Katrina (Roland) Fuertes, Andria Jemison of Cuba AL., Floretta Portis and Zelda Randolph of New Orleans, LA. and Ungenetta (Troy) Green of Kingsland, GA; five sons, Prentiss Amerson, Huntsville, AL., Stanley Jemison and Andrea (Shannon) Jemison of Cuba, Al., Tramaine Moss, Birmingham, AL. and Brent Koen of Yantley, AL; one brother, Henry (Louise) Portis of Detroit, MI., and one sister, Geneva (Alvan) Adams of Killeen, TX., seven sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will truly miss Zack.
