Erma "Jean" Jones, age 74 of York, Alabama, was born in the city of York on May 6, 1943 to the late Walter (Son) and Lilly Bell McCorkle, transitioned and entered into eternal rest January 22, 2018 at Rush Foundation Medical Center, Meridian, Mississippi.  Service of Remembrance is Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. from Eastern Star Baptist Church, 112 Curl Road, in the Grant City Community of York.  Rev. Charles H. Delaine, pastor, will deliver the eulogy and offer words of comfort and consolation.  Sister Jones will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.  Interment follows in Elmwood Memorial Gardens, Highway 11 East, York.  Visitation for family and friends is scheduled Friday evening (Jan, 26th) from 3-6:00 p.m. in the Weatherly Chapel. Jean gave her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Eastern Star Baptist Church by Rev. C.B. Coolie. She has been a faithful member of Eastern Star where she severed in several capacities including the Matrons, the choir, the Kitchen Committee, Sunday School teacher, and Assistant Sunday School Superintendent. Jean was a devoted mother, family member, community leader and friend. She lived her life working, serving and caring for others. She graduated from Sumter County Training School in York, AL and was employed throughout her life. After retiring from the Bank of York, Jean never stopped working and serving. She was a devoted Substitute Teacher for the Sumter County Board of Education for many years and a loyal member of the Busy Bee Club. She was currently an elected official, serving her 2nd term as a member of the York City Council. Jean lived a good life devoted to the Lord and helping others. She departed this life on January 22, 2018. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her granddaughter DeAndra, her grandmother Erma “Mama Shine” McCorkle, and her sisters Chalonde M. Rembert and Celestine Jones. Jean leaves a host of family and friends to cherish her memories: She leaves five siblings: Walter “Buck” McCorkle, Los Angeles, CA; Apostle Lloyd (Shirley)Capers, Gulfport, MS, Frances (Ervin) Fernandez, Gulfport, MS; Joyce Ann McCorkle, Tuscaloosa, AL; and Lois Fields, New Orleans, LA. Jean was a devoted mother and leaves seven children to continue her legacy: Darryl (Tracy)McCorkle, Lawrenceville, GA; Darla Wade, Gardendale, AL;  Durentha “Dee-Dee” (Ernest) Hines, Livingston, AL; Derek (Leah) Jones, Tucson, AZ; Dion (Amber) Jones, Sugarland, TX; Duane Jones, Jackson, MS; and Dawn Ward, Huntsville, AL. Grandma Jean was the pillar of the family and leaves 15 grandchildren to cherish her memories: Jenise (Albert) Johnson, Jenelle (Omar) Pieters, Marcus McCorkle, Randy Wade, Ranisha Wade, Randall Wade, DeAndre Hines, Jeremy Hines, Eboni Jones, Amber Jones, Morgan Jones, Kelly Jones, Corey Jones,  Jordan Jones, Dah’Nala Jones, Tyson Ward, and Madisyn Ward.  She will be dearly missed by her six great-grand children, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.To the entire Jones family, we at Weatherly Funeral Home offer to each of you our most sincere and heartfelt sympathy and condolences.  Our prayer remains that your abiding faith in God will continue to comfort, to strengthen and sustain you during your many hours of sorrow.
